Op. 55a: Six Pièces Romantiques

Publisher: Enoch
Date: 1896

Instrumentation: violin (or cello) and piano

Originally composed as a set of six pieces for piano duet in 1890, Six Pièces Romantiques, Op. 55, was later adapted in several forms. No. 2, La Chaise à Porteurs, was transcribed by Chaminade for violin (or cello) and piano in 1896 (Enoch 2825). In 1923, four of the remaining movements were transcribed for solo piano, and several were also orchestrated by Chaminade. These adaptations reflect her frequent practice of reworking her compositions for different performing forces. The autograph manuscript remains in the possession of the Chaminade family.

Six Pièces Romantiques is one of only two works that Chaminade composed originally for piano duet. Her other piano duet publications are arrangements of previously composed works. She wrote this suite in 1890, at the age of thirty-three, by which time she had already established herself as a major composer through works such as the Piano Sonata, the Six Concert Études, and the Concertstück. Each of the six pieces is dedicated to a different female pianist.
