Pierrette, a traditional figure from the Italian commedia dell’arte, known for her lighthearted and mischievous nature.

Dedicated to André Gresse. Enoch plate 1641. “Pierrette is, in the theater, a feminine Pierrot. ‘Our Pierrette here is coquettish, fanciful, and despotic.’ By this is meant that the piece demands strict observance of its character: the silences, accents, and, in a word, its ‘attitude’ must be carefully observed, for neglecting these details destroys the particular character one wishes to suggest. This character is expressed by the word chic—a commonplace word, yet one that is perfectly suited to this music and cannot be replaced by any equivalent.
