Op. 21: Sonata en ut minor
Dedicated to Moritz Moszkowski (1854–1925), published in 1895. The last movement “Appassionato” was published earlier in 1886 as the fourth etude in the Six Etudes de Concert, Op. 35. Only one record of Chaminade performing this work exists: a concert that included the first movement in London in 1893.
1st movement – Allegro appassionato (C minor):
Modified sonata form with a fugal section beginning at m. 36. The recapitulation enters at m. 159. Unlike conventional sonata form, it avoids contrasting key areas and remains firmly rooted in C minor, heightening its intensity.
2nd movement – Andante (Ab major):
Ternary (ABA’) form, the middle section moves briefly into related minor harmonies before returning.
3rd movement – Allegro con fuoco (C minor):
Rondo-sonata hybrid. Rhythmic drive and virtuosic passagework dominate, with the principal theme persistently reasserting itself.
