The work received favorable reviews from many critics. According to Cécile Tardif, however, one journalist expressed surprise that “the power of conception of the Choral was the work of a young female composer.” (Tardif, Portrait, 55.) Chaminade dedicated the suite to her friend and teacher Benjamin Godard, who wrote to her on April 17: “I like this work very much, you know? This work is good whatever certain stupid critics say; this work is good, I repeat it, and if it was signed by Saint-Saëns or Massenet, the idiots in question would admire it.”

Chaminade later transcribed the suite for piano four hands (1881). She also published two individual piano solo transcriptions from the suite: Scherzo (No. 1) and Intermezzo (No. 2) in 1892.
