Op. 12a: Pastorale enfantine

Publisher: Hamelle
Date: 1885
Instrumentation: piano four hands

Dedicated to “my niece Antoinette Chaminade”.

Pastorale enfantine appeared in both solo-piano and piano four hands in Félix Le Couppey’s Recueil des Enfants, a pedagogical anthology documented by 1885. The presence of both versions in the collection suggests that the work circulated in parallel formats before its later publication as separate editions. During the late 1890s, solo piano and four hands editions were issued independently. In 1897, Ernest Alder prepared a transcription for piano and violin or flute and piano (Enoch plate 3600), while B. Albert transcribed the work for cello and piano (Enoch plate 3457).

The piece evokes rustic freshness through lilting rhythms, gentle melodies, and a warm harmonic palette.
