Text by Théophile Gautier. There are at least four other famous contemporaries of Chaminade’s who also set this text and include Chausson, Debussy, Godard and Tosti. In reviewing the renditions of Debussy, Chausson and Tosti (Godard was not available), both Debussy and Chausson, along with Chaminade use rhythmic motives that represents flying butterflies and their wings. In this piece, Chaminade uses arpeggios of thirty-second notes in the accompaniment to represent them.
