The designation Fragment in the title suggests a concise musical sketch or occasional piece rather than an extended, fully developed composition. The work takes the form of a military march, featuring a fanfare-like motif and three principal melodic ideas. The principal theme is later transformed into the minor mode and introduced as the subject of a fugue. An extended development centered on E major leads back to the opening material, culminating in a thunderous left-hand figure marked Timbales just before the closing bars. This unusual orchestral effect raises the intriguing possibility that the piece may have been conceived, at least in part, as a sketch for an orchestral work. In 1921, Chaminade added a secondo part for the two-piano version.
