Op. 142: Sérénade aux étoiles
Dedicated to Adolphe Hennebains, who had recently been appointed head of the flute class at the Paris Conservatory. Sérénade aux étoiles reflects the close collaboration between the two artists. They often performed together in musical evenings at Parisian salons such as those of Madeleine Godard or Mme Capoy. Accompanied by Chaminade at the piano, Hennebains primarily performed the Concertino for Flute, whose orchestral version he had premiered in 1906. The frontispiece was illustrated by Georges Auriol who created artwork for a number of Chaminade’s compositions.
“Serenade to the Stars” evokes a starlit sky through the flute’s high register. The gentle, flowing lines are accompanied by distant bell-like figures in the piano, blending impressionistic color with Chaminade’s characteristic lyricism. The piece seems to have gained popularity in the 1920s, frequently heard in concerts broadcast over the TSF (radio).
