The title Vert-Galant derives from the nickname of King Henry IV of France, who was famously flirtatious and amorous even into old age.

This work is dedicated to Berthe Duranton, a pianist who later taught at the Schola Cantorum in Paris and established a branch of the institution in Le Havre. This charming work evokes the gallant spirit of Henri IV, Chaminade combines lighthearted elegance with subtle irony and expressive depth.This piece was transcribed to piano four hands by Steiger.
