Op. 1: Deux Mazurkas
Published in 1869 by M. Colombier, when Chaminade was twelve years old. The publication date does not necessarily represent the date of composition; the mazurkas were likely composed earlier. No. 1 in F major, dedicated to her mother (C. L. 410); No. 2 in B-flat major, dedicated to Madame de Guerle (C. L. 411).
The harmonic language is predominantly diatonic and conventional, with clear tonic–dominant relationships, a subdominant-based contrasting section, and regular cadential patterns. Its harmonic predictability and symmetrical phrase structure reflect the early stage of Chaminade’s compositional development.
