Op. 116: Sous le masque
Dedicated to Madame Saillard-Dietz, the work evokes a veil, or “mask,” of mystery. It opens with a lively, playful motif developed throughout, set in a light waltz rhythm with subtly offbeat accents, creating a masquerade-like atmosphere in which the ballroom comes alive, tinged with coquettish charm. The piece recalls the Romantic waltzes of Saint-Saëns and Gounod.
