Published in 1919, in the aftermath of the First World War, Au Pays dévasté is dedicated to Joseph Baume,a pianist for whom Chaminade had already written her Duo symphonique for two pianos (1905).
Written in G minor, this piece opens with a funereal bass descent and unfolds into a romantic melody echoed between both hands.
