Op. 34: Piano Trio No. 2 in A minor
1. Allegro moderato 2. Lento 3. Allegro energico.
Dedicated to the cellist Jules Delsart, this piece was perhaps composed alongside the ballet Callirhoé, Les Amazones, and Concertstück. The year 1887 also coincided with personal upheavals. Chaminade ended her relationship with the physician Paul Landowski in order to devote herself fully to her career as a pianist and composer.
Chaminade would go on to write numerous short pieces, designed to reach a wide audience. Yet this Trio No. 2 belongs to a period rich in ambitious works, both in scale and the musical language. Though it lacks a scherzo, it has a duration equivalent to that of Trio No. 1 (1880). The work has a rich, full, warm, and dense texture, with many contrasts, unexpected changes of character, and Romantic harmony with modal colors.
