Text by Armand Silvestre. “The Fisherman and the Water Nymph” is a miniature symphonic poem. According to mythology, the water nymph would lure fishermen with their beauty and singing. The legends are in conflict as to the fate of the fisherman/sailor ranging from the water nymph gaining and/or losing immortality or by falling in love and bearing a child. The moral of the text indicates that fishermen should beware of the charms of this creature. The flowing arpeggios suggest the shimmering movement of water, while lyrical passages evoke the seductive call of the nymph. Tthe drama between human and supernatural worlds was represented by the sudden harmonic shifts and virtuosic figurations.
