Dedicated to Théodore Dubois, Director of the Paris Conservatoire, and originally written for piano (E. & C. 2397). The work gained international attention when the Prélude for organ, Op. 78, was performed at Queen Victoria’s funeral in January 1901. As Anne Commire notes in Women in World History, the London Daily Chronicle had already observed in 1892 that, “whether as a composer or as a pianist, her success was unquestionable.”
