W263: Madeleine
Publisher: Enoch & Costallat
Date: 1886
Instrumentation: Voice
Dedicated to Mademoiselle E. Bonnefin, with text by Édouard Guinand and written in E minor (E. & C. 1133). A beautiful ballad about a girl who meets a shepherd at noon to share a meal beside a stream. The accompaniment evokes the sound of a strummed instrument—such as a guitar, mandolin, or harp—with flowing arpeggios. The poet now sits alone, mourning Madeline, whose loss, whether through betrayal or death, fills him with sorrow.
