Text by Charles Cros. Subtitled Légende, this ballad-like mélodie tells the story of Gottlieb, an organist whose unrequited love drives the narrative. Written in modified strophic form with a recurring five-measure refrain, the piece shifts between two- to four-measure phrases for expressive variety. The legend relates that when the young woman he loved married another, Gottlieb failed to appear at the organ; later, his restless spirit is said to haunt the forest at midnight, conjuring ghostly music that frightens all who pass.
